Opening Soon: Lilly Pulitzer

Sundial welcomes Lilly Pulitzer Store

Resort wear iconic brand to open store in the fourth quarter of 2018.

St. Petersburg, Florida (July 30, 2018 )– Today, Sundial St. Petersburg announced that iconic American resort wear brand, Lilly Pulitzer, will be bringing a seasonal location to the downtown St. Petersburg retail and entertainment complex. The brand is expected to settle into Sundial for six months, starting in the fourth quarter of 2018.

“With world famous beaches, record numbers of visitors and locals who enjoy a perpetual sun and fun lifestyle, Sundial is a great location for Lilly Pulitzer,” said center owner Bill Edwards. “We’re looking forward to the store’s arrival later this year, just in time to kick off our holiday celebration.”

The story of how Lilly Pulitzer found inspiration for her business fits perfectly with the Sunshine City. With a family in the citrus business, Lilly opened a fruit juice stand on Via Mizner in Palm Beach where squeezing juice made a mess of her clothes. Seeking to camouflage the stains, she designed a sleeveless cotton dress with bright, colorful printed patterns, which customers just happened to love! So much so, she ended up selling more clothes than juice, and thus the Lilly Pulitzer clothing brand was born. Today the brand maintains 62 locations across the US and has been highly sought after for collaborations with other leading multichannel retailers including Target and Pottery Barn.

The colorful, bold, and chic women’s clothing shop with a passion for prints will take over the current location of the Tampa Bay Rowdies team store on the first floor, which will remain at Sundial in a new location.

Lilly Pulitzer speaks to generations of rule-breaking, sun-followers who celebrate the spontaneous bohemian spirit of Lilly Pulitzer. The company’s effortless fashions are truly born from an original. It all happened by accident, when in 1959-ish Lilly (McKim) Pulitzer—a stylish Palm Beach hostess and socialite whose husband Peter Pulitzer owned several Florida citrus groves—needed a project of her own. With Peter’s produce, she opened a juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Lilly Pulitzer’s business was a hit, but squeezing oranges, lemons, limes, and pink grapefruit made a mess of her clothes. Realizing that she needed a juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would camouflage the stains. The result? A comfortable sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton in pink, green, yellow and orange. Although her customers liked Lilly’s juice, they loved her shift dresses. Soon Lilly was selling more shift dresses than juice, so she decided to stop squeezing and focus on designing and selling her “Lillys.” Lilly Pulitzer became a fashion sensation and a creator of authentic American resort wear as we know it. The brand is now more popular than ever and continues to create authentic printed styles straight from the in-house print design studio. For more brand history and juicy stories, head to
